Vero cell history
Vero cells are obtained from the kidney of the African green monkey. This anchorage-dependent cell line has been licensed for the production of both live and inactivated viral vaccines. Throughout the world, Vero cells have also been used for the production of several viruses. Virus propagation in cell culture systems has pushed the development of virus vaccines enormously. The Vero cell line is the most widely accepted cell line by regulatory authorities and has been used for over 40 years to produce diverse virus vaccines.
Recommendation for the future
The regulatory requirements discourage the use of animal products, such as serum in the process of vaccine production. They should thereby be avoided. Capricorn Scientific has developed serum-free and animal-component free media for the propagation of Vero cells. The media also support the growth of Vero cells on microcarriers in controlled environments. The media are ideal for vaccine production using the Vero cell line.
VeroPrime
Our Vero medium VeroPrime is a completely chemically-defined cell culture and production medium. It was especially designed for production of viruses and recombinant proteins. It is free of animal and human origin to match the demands of the biopharmaceutical production.

VeroVax
Our Vero medium VeroVax is a serum-free, animal and human origin-free cell culture and production medium. It was especially designed for the cultivation of Vero cells, but can also be used for other kidney-derived cell lines, including MDCK, MDBK, and PK-15. The medium enhances virus and recombinant protein production. VeroVax is formulated with a low protein concentration, allowing for easier purification of your final product.
