Reduction of the Serum content
The mixture of Insulin, Transferrin, and Selenium (ITS) is used as a basal medium supplement to reduce the amount of animal serum required for cell cultivation. ITS in solution is routinely used in serum-free media as a supplement to increase the viability and proliferation of a variety of cells.
Insulin promotes the uptake of glucose and various amino acids. It also facilitates the intracellular transport and synthesis of proteins as well as nucleic acids.
Transferrin is an iron carrier and helps to reduce toxic concentrations of oxygen radicals.
Selenium acts as a co-factor for glutathione peroxidase and other proteins, and serves as an antioxidant in culture media.
